Energy Rating Programs
Colourcoil Industries Sdn. Bhd. is an approved ENERGY STAR® partner and we are dedicated to promoting and providing energy efficient, environmentally friendly pre-painted roofing materials that will withstand extreme weather for a lifetime. Available energy rating programs include the following: Energy Star LEED ( Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design ) GBI (Malaysia’s Green Building Index)
What is the ENERGY STAR program?
EPA’s (Environment Protection Agency, USA) ENERGY STAR program is familiar to many homeowners who may have noticed the unique label on appliances and electronic equipment. The ENERGY STAR program also has roof products criteria for cool roof products. A roof that meets the ENERGY STAR performance requirements is considered one that is cool and helps to reduce urban heat island effects. The criteria for a labeled roof in the new version 2.0 of ENERGY STAR, starting in October 1, 2007 are:
In version 2.0 Energy Star will also require that the thermal emittance value be reported for all roof products. Although no criteria for a minimum value will be required, EPA will collect the emittance data and monitor the situation to determine if an emittance criterion based on climate zone might be applicable in future versions of the program. The surface of the test panels or roofs used to generate the initial and three-year aged data can not be cleaned in any way in version 2.0.
Many cool “Solar Reflective” colors from COLOURCOIL PVF2 Series, METALLIC PVF2 Series and DUOTONE Series (70% Kynar 500 based) prepainted steel for metal roofing can meet the above criteria.

What is LEED ?
“LEED” is an acronym for the US Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design rating program. This program comprises a certification rating system for an entire building project, planning, commissioning and produce selection. LEED awards points to those building projects that comply with sustainability standards. Architects, designers and building owners can plan a project in order to acquire points in the program to achieve a level of certification for the building project. There are many LEED programs for different types of building projects. The flagship program, LEED-NC (New Construction), awards points within the following major categories for a project:
Sustainable Sites
Water Efficiency
Energy/Atmosphere
Materials/Resources
Indoor environmental quality
Innovation/Design process.
Within each category points are available for compliance with specific design or building practices. A total of 69 points are available if all credits from all categories were to be achieved. LEED designates four levels of certification as: Certified minimum 26 points
Silver Minimum
Silver Minimum
Gold Platinum Minimum
What is Malaysia's (GBI)?
The Green Building Index (GBI) is Malaysia’s industry recognised green rating tool for buildings to promote sustainability in the built environment and raise awareness among Developers, Architects, Engineers, Planners, Designers, Contractors and the Public about environmental issues. The rating system has been developed specifically for the Malaysian-tropical climate and will provide opportunity for developers to design and construct green, sustainable buildings that can provide energy savings, water savings, a healthier indoor environment, better connectivity to public transport and the adoption of recycling and greenery for their projects. Buildings will be awarded the GBI Malaysia rating based on 6 key criteria:
Energy Efficiency
Indoor Environmental Quality
Sustainable Site Planning and Management
Materials and Resources
Water Efficiency
Innovation
The GBI rating tool evaluates the sustainable aspects of buildings that have been divided to residential and non-residential. Each of the above six categories are allocated points for compliance with specific design or building practices. A total of 100 points are available if all credits from all categories were to be achieved. GBI designates four levels of certification as:
Certified : 50 – 65 points
Silver : 66 – 75 points
Gold : 76 – 85 points
Platinum : 86+ points
Similar to LEED rating program, a cool Kynar 500 based prepainted metal roof can qualify for one point in SM12 Design under Sustainable Site Planning & Management category if it covers at least 75% of the roof surface area (excluding parapets, skylights and equipment) and meets the following criteria for Solar Reflectance Index (SRI) values:
Low slope (= 2:12) min SRI of 78
Steep slope ( > 2:12) min SRI of 29
Not only this, a cool metal roof can contribute to other points in the GBI rating program due to its recycled content, recyclability and energy efficiency.

Most points awarded in the LEED program come from weighted averages of the products, designs or systems used to construct a building. In essence, a specific building project receives points rather than a unique product. A cool Kynar 500 based prepainted metal roof can contribute to other points in the LEED program due to its recycled content, recyclability and energy efficiency. In the Materials/Resources category, cool Kynar 500 based prepainted metal roofing can account for 2 points by contributing to the building’s weighted average recycled content. The fact that cool Kynar 500 based prepainted metal is 100% recyclable helps with the construction waste management credit. The use of a cool Kynar 500 based prepainted metal roof can also contribute up to 10 points for the Energy Optimization credit in the category of Energy/Atmosphere.
In USA, a growing number of federal, state and local governments are now requiring that the construction of public (and in some cases private) buildings be associated with some minimum level of LEED certification. In many of these cases, the requirement is at least a level of Silver certification. Cities such as Washington DC, Pasadena, CA and Montgomery County, MD are now mandating that ALL new buildings, even those in the private sector, must meet LEED guidelines.
